Curtain & Valance Notes

  3. Ascot valance & Pennant valance
    An Ascot valance is a pointed valance hung from a standard or a 2.5" or 4.5" flat rod. Ascot valance can be flat (called pennant valance - for design or printed fabric) or gathered on rod (by multiply the width of your window by 2 or 3 - for solid color fabric).
  4. Fullness - curtain: Fullness is a term used for the amount of fabric gathered, shirred together to create curtain.
    + Gathered curtain to display the pattern fabric, the Fullness can be 1.5 to 2 times rod width.
    + Gathered curtain with extra Fullness: the Fullness can be 2.5 to 3 times rod width
  5. Fullness - valance: Fullness is a term used for the amount of fabric gathered, shirred together to create valances.
    + Flat valance has 1 times fullness, Don't forget the return of the rod if used for the Flat valance.
    The overall width of the Flat valance = the rod width ( from left to right) + return of the rod left side + return of the rod right side
    + Gathered valance to display the pattern fabric, the Fullness can be 1.5 to 2 times rod width.
    + Gathered valance with extra Fullness: the Fullness can be 2.5 to 3 times rod width
  6. Jabot: A decorative vertical end of an over treatment that usually finishes a horizontal festoon
  7. Lined - Why do the curtain need to be lined?  
    Lining will

       1. Add insulation
       2. Privacy is assured
       3. Light or Noise is eliminated
       4. Protect your carpet, furniture and drapery caused by the sun
       5. Regular lining filters light
       6. Thermal lining lets light in but blocks out much of the heat
       7. Blackout lining blocks out all heat and light. Blackout lining is heavier and more substantial than Regular lining or Thermal lining, your room will be totally dark when the draperies are closed. For the bedroom, it will create the perfect environment for sleep if you don't want wake up early or you are sleeplessness. Also if a room faces direct sunlight in the morning or in the afternoon you may wish to use a block the light and will save your electric bill.
  8. Lined - Why do the valance need to be lined?  
    Lining will

       1. Add insulation.

  9. Return - do I need a return?
    The return will used to cover the side which has the string to open & close the curtain (for traverse rod) or the end of the rod ( for the other rods)
  10. Tie Up Valance - how to?
    A Tie Up valance is hung from a standard or a 2.5" or 4.5" flat rod. It should hang almost flat or a little gathered on the rod. With two long fabric strap ties or ribbons sewn into heading, simply tying bows, which can be adjusted to create the desired look and hanging depth you desire.
    If Tie Up Valance Curtain
    +  has a finished width of 52" wide, and will accommodate approximately 35" - 45" of window width.
     + measures 26" long overall laying flat, the length can be adjusted approx 16".
  11. Tiers and valances
    Tiers are short rod-pocket panels, can be used to cover the bottom portion (a third or a half) of a window. Tiers can be used with valances for a complete finished look. Tiers is often used in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms of the house.
